Volunteer Information
Over 200 volunteers are needed on Thanksgiving morning to make the Valparaiso Turkey Trot a success. Volunteer opportunities are available for both Wednesday, November 22, 2017 and event day Thursday, November 23, 2017. All volunteers receive a complimentary 100% cotton short sleeve t-shirt imprinted with the same event shirt artwork!

 

 

Pre-Race Volunteers - Wednesday, November 22, 2017
  • Signage (10:00 am - 4:00 pm) Place directional signs along the 5K and 10K race routes. Volunteers will be assigned in two hour increments. 
  • Set Up (7:00 pm - 9:00 pm) Set up the field house and the Valparaiso High School parking lots to prepare for the race.

 

Race Day Volunteers -Thursday, November 23, 2017
  • Morning set up (5:30 am - 7:00 am) Set up signage, barricades and cones on the race route and in parking lots. 
  • Registration (6:30 am - 9:00 am) Help walkers and runners as they pick up bib numbers, t-shirts and goody bags.
  • Food (7:30 am - 10:30 am) Set up and distribute food to walkers and runners following the race.
  • Water Stops (7:30 am - 10:30 am) Keep walkers and runners hydrated on both the 5K and 10K routes. The 5K hosts one water stop; the 10K hosts two. Water stops are great for local business to come together as a team on Thanksgiving morning.
  • Course Marshals (7:30 am - 10:30 am) Direct race traffic and ensure that each particpant can walk or run without worries and stay on the correct route. Course Marshals must have own transporation to and from designated position.
  • Split Timers (7:30 am - 10:30 am) Keep walkers and runners on pace by calling out times from stop watch. ?Whether someone is attempting to break a person record or just keeping pace, knowing their time is key. Split Timers must have own transporation to and from designated position.
  • Start and Finish Line (7:30 am - 10:30 am) Assist with race traffic and car traffic at start and finish areas.
  • Post-Event Clean-Up (9:00 am - 11:00 am) Help restore the Valparaiso High School Field House and the city streets. Assist in removing signage and barricades along the race route and event site.

 

Out of town on race day, but still want to help? Our walkers and runners love baked goods after crossing the finish line! If you are interested in providing a plate of cookies or other simple baked item (easy to serve and eat) for the race, please contact us at turkeytrot@porterstarke.org.
