Into the Wild
Paramount, 148 minutes (Rated R)
"Into the Wild is the true story of Christopher, a 23-year old man who graduates from college and begins a soul-searching journey across the United States. During his journey, he creates a new identity and meets many interesting people with very different ways of living.
As the movie progresses and Christopher enters the wild terrain of Alaska, the audience learns more about Christopher's childhood. His family was raised to value material things and money and Christopher adamantly disagrees with those morals and values. It becomes apparent that his journey is a way to cope with his past and help him to process his life thus far while creating a new life based on knowledge and the pursuit of happiness. In the end, Christopher discovers that happiness truly is greatest when shared with others.
The story's theme and Christopher's charismatic personality left me questioning my own existence and my ongoing quest for purpose in life. The movie helped me to realize that life is more about the journey than the end result. Artist Corita Kent once said that 'life is a succession of moments; to live each one is to succeed.' I believe this movie reinforced that value in me and I feel that others that see this movie will also learn to better appreciate the journey and adventure of life."
