One Cell in the Sea by A Fine Frenzy
Virgin Records, 2007
"It wasn't just the relaxing sound of the piano or the natural vocals that attracted me to A Fine Frenzy's debut album, One Cell in the Sea. It was the name of the artist: A Fine Frenzy. Taken literally from William Shakespeare's
A Midsummer Night's Dream, the name conducts a kind of passion, a wild excitement, for life - for anything - that we should all be so lucky to have.
Now I'd have to admit that I'm not the biggest fan of A Midsummer Night's Dream or the other works of Shakespeare. But regardless of your like or dislike of the material, there's a reason that it's still studied and highly regarded; Shakespeare was a poet. The worlds he created were relatable,
yet filled with elements from epic stories and pure imagination.
Alison Sudol, the vocal and songwriting talent of A Fine Frenzy, is a
modern-day poet. Setting her poems to piano chords, Alison skillfully conveys the same relevance in her songs as Shakespeare did over four centuries ago.
One Cell in the Sea is a classic album; a mix of fantasy, defiant excitement and raw emotion. Listening to A Fine Frenzy is what I'd imagine a child's walk through Wonderland might feel like; new surroundings, new experiences, and new ways of thinking about things in which we've already claimed to know the answer. We should never feel too busy, too tired, or too old to take that walk."
