Shine A Light
Paramount Vantage, 122 minutes (Rated PG-13)
"Shine A Light is a film about a Rolling Stones benefit concert in New York City. It was directed by Martin Scorsese and, as I'm writing this, is currently playing in the IMAX format and at regular theatres. The visual and aural presentation on the big screen and state of the art sound system in the IMAX theatres makes this movie an even more memorable experience.
I believe that Shine A Light is the perfect demonstration of the state of flow. Flow, as described in the books Happier by Dr. Tal Ben-Shaher and Flow by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, is the study of optimal human experience, "a state of concentration so focused that it amounts to absolute absorption in an activity...the sense of time and emotional problems seem to disappear and there is an exhilarating feeling of transcendence."
The five principle artists involved in this movie (Martin Scorsese, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ron Wood and Charlie Watts) have been entertaining for over forty years. Although all of them are now in their sixties, they bring amazing energy to reach what I thought must be one those moments of optimal human experience. And, as an audience member, my sense of time and problems disappeared. If I wasn't in the state of flow, I was definitely in the moment, which is a pretty fine place to be.
There are guest appearances by Jack White, Buddy Guy and Christina Aguilera. There are also some vintage interviews and news reports about the band from their earlier days. And it's rated PG-13 so you can comfortably take your parents to see it. Have fun!
