Independence Employment Services (IES)

Independence Employment Services (IES) is a supported employment program that helps people with long-term mental illness seek, attain and maintain employment. With a goal of finding satisfactory, permanent placement, the IES Specialist works with consumers to individualize a plan for employment and follows the consumer through every step of the process. From resume assistance, to finding a job and on-site coaching, the IES Specialist works with the consumer to reach the best possible outcome in employment.

How Does It Work?

Clients can be referred internally from a Porter-Starke Services employee or externally from a Vocational Rehabilitation Services (VRS) counselor. As a Purchase Of Service Agreement (POSA) holder with VRS, Independence Employment Services can secure funding to help a client through the job search process.

  • Job Development - The IES Specialist will work with the client to determine strengths, abilities, preferences and problem-solve through barriers to help the client choose an appropriate employment field. Then, together the client and the IES Specialist will work to find an opening in the client's chosen field in his/her community.
  • Job Coaching - After securing a position, the IES Specialist can stay on the new jobsite with the client until the client, the employer and IES Specialist are comfortable that he/she has stabilized on the job. Of course this will be the client's choice, but research indicates a much higher success rate with job retention if the client allows Job Coaching.
  • Follow-Along Services - Once the client is stabilized on the job, the role of the IES Specialist is over. At that point, the client's Case Manager will check in periodically with the client to assure that he/she continues to do well and to lend any assistance/resources the client might need.

Is there a cost to me, the client?

Not for the services indicated above. For some clients, additional training and medically necessary skills attainment might be warranted, and in most cases those services will be covered by Medicaid if the client is eligible. There are several options available for clients that are not Medicaid eligible, and the IES Specialist will be glad to assist you if you have further questions.

Is there any cost to the employer?

Never. In fact, there are many benefits to the employer including:

  • A new hire with a built-in trainer
  • Pre-screening
  • Opportunity for a business tax credit
  • A person with a desire to work and to be successful
  • The satisfaction in knowing you've really helped someone
