Life. On Purpose.

Living life with intention as you age can go a long way in helping to prevent substance misuse, isolation and depression.

Choose a Healthy Lifestyle

Finding healthy ways to live and grow are important at any age. You may notice that healthy habits can change for you over time, and for many reasons. While growing older may introduce new challenges, the possibilities for a healthy lifestyle are endless. Focusing on key areas can help ensure you make the most of your wellbeing - in mind, body and spirit!

Take Your Medication as Directed

It’s important to take your medication at the right dose, the right way, and at the right time, whether it is prescribed or over-the-counter. Any change in medication use, whether accidental or on purpose, can lead to misuse. Take your medication safely. Follow all medication directions and your doctor’s advice carefully. Be aware of side effects. Know potential interactions.

Don't Overdo It

Using alcohol, illegal drugs, and over-the-counter or prescription medications in a way that they are not meant to be used is substance misuse. Among older adults, substance misuse, particularly alcohol misuse, is on the rise. Recognize symptoms of substance misuse. Losing touch with loved ones or lack of interest in usual activities. Changes in eating, sleeping or hygiene habits. Unexplained chronic pain or memory problems.

Check In with Your Mood

Feeling persistently sad can indicate depression, but so can low motivation, lack of energy, or physical complaints, such as arthritis pain or worsening headaches. For older adults, depression can often occur with other illnesses and can last longer than in younger people. Boost how you feel. Walk outside with a friend, take care of a pet, or volunteer. Keep a regular sleep schedule. And reach out when you need help.

Find Purpose in Each Day

Studies show that having a sense of purpose in life improves your overall health. Living with purpose can shape your decisions, activities, and goals. For adults over the age of fifty, this can give your life more meaning. Explore ways to find your purpose. Continue learning and growing through meaningful work. Do something kind for someone else. Find joy in the moment.
