Education & Experiences

In addition to providing treatment, Porter-Starke Services leads regular trainings, educational workshops, and experiences throughout our community. These events offer people the opportunity to deepen their understanding of health, balance, and hope in all its forms.

Mental Health First Aid

Learn how to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is a training course that teaches you how to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. This 8-hour class is specifically designed to teach you the skills and understanding to better help adults or youth.

Adult MHFA

Adult MHFA trains you how to help someone 18 and older who may be experiencing a mental health problem or crisis. Learn warning signs, risk factors, how to develop an action plan, and how to access appropriate resources.

Youth MHFA

Youth MHFA is designed for adults who regularly interact with adolescents. Learn how to interact with and help youth who are experiencing mental health issues, addictions or crisis.

Additional MHFA Courses

MHFA courses focused on unique populations are also available upon request, including: FIRE/EMS, Higher Education, Military, Veterans and Their Families, Older Adults, and Public Safety.

Life on Purpose

Knowing that adults over the age of 50 may face unique challenges, we offer programs, activities, and education designed to connect with healthy lifestyle choices.

WISE Program

The Wellness Initiative for Senior Education (WISE) Program is a FREE educational opportunity that helps people over age 50 embrace healthy living as they age.

The program runs for 6 weeks. Classes meet once a week for discussion, small-group activities, and individual exercises that explore the aging process, making healthy lifestyle choices, safe medication use, the impact of alcohol, risk factors and behaviors older adults should avoid, how medications affect seniors differently, ways to avoid misuse, and how to communicate more effectively with healthcare providers.

Healthy IDEAS

Healthy IDEAS (Identifying Depression and Empowering Activities for Seniors) is a national, evidence-based program that can help older adults improve their emotional and physical health. Through one-on-one time and case management services, the Healthy IDEAS program ensures that older adults get the help they need to manage symptoms of depression and to fully live their lives.

The program includes screening for symptoms of depression, education about depression for the client and caregivers, linkage to primary care and mental health providers, an empowerment approach that helps encourage involvement in meaningful activities, and assessment of the client’s progress.

Circle of Friends

Circle of Friends is a 12-week program designed to build and strengthen relationships among seniors. Group participants can share in their experiences, receive peer support, and have the opportunity to make new friends.

Led by a trained facilitator while participating in social activities - including yoga, meditation, games, crafts, nature walks, cooking classes, among others - the program helps members create a sense of community and connection.

The Labyrinth

Come for a uniquely mindful experience walking a centuries-old path in a natural outdoor setting. Open year-round for walking at any time.

Labyrinths are sacred paths. They have existed in every age and faith tradition throughout time as a response to the human need for meditation, healing, and connection. Labyrinths represent the journey into our deepest wisdom and outward into the everyday world. Walking its single path to the center and out again can help relax the body, quiet the mind, open the heart, and refresh the spirit. The Labyrinth is located at Porter-Starke Services, 701 Wall Street in Valparaiso, on the corner of Wall Street & Cumberland Drive. Open year-round, the Labyrinth is available for walking at any time. Parking is available in surrounding lots.

Come Walk the Labyrinth

We invite you to come visit and take a journey on the Labyrinth.

Pause at the entrance and notice your first step onto the path. Walk comfortably at your own pace. If needed, step carefully around others or pause at a turning to let them pass. With an open heart and mind, release any cares or concerns along the way.

When you reach the center, take a moment to pause and breathe.

As you journey outward along the winding path, notice any gifts of awareness that now accompany you as you re-enter the world.

We hope this labyrinth walk will strengthen your experience of health, balance, and hope in your life.
