Substance Use Treatment

Living with substance use or addiction affects a person’s physical, social, and mental wellbeing. Our range of evidence-based treatment and support can include therapy, medication, intensive outpatient treatment, relapse prevention, and peer support from people with lived experience who have been successful in the recovery process.

Therapy

Substance use disorders can be a focus of treatment in individual and/or family therapy. During outpatient therapy, clients gain new insight or information that will assist in improving coping skills and developing new strategies for dealing with mental health or substance-related issues. Our therapists use a variety of evidence-based practices in therapy, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Motivational Interviewing (MI). Therapy may be recommended in conjunction with group treatment, as a “step-down” in care after completion of group treatment, or as stand-alone treatment.

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

IOP serves adults recently stopping alcohol or substance misuse. The structured group program focuses on education, early recovery skills, relapse prevention skills, and coping strategies that can help prevent relapse. This program includes random drug screens and breath alcohol testing. Meets three times per week for 3-hour groups, which helps participants continue daily responsibilities like work or school.

Addictions Aftercare Group

For people who have stopped using alcohol or drugs with sustained recovery, the Aftercare group provides ongoing support. This group is often recommended after completing IOP and Relapse Prevention. Meets once weekly for a 1-hour group.

Relapse Prevention

For people who have stopped using alcohol or drugs, Relapse Prevention group helps them from starting again. This group is often recommended after completing Intensive Outpatient Program, or for people who enter treatment with some sustained recovery. Meets once weekly for a 2-hour group.

Prime for Life®

Prime for Life® fosters attitudes, beliefs, and understanding that help people reduce their risk for any type of alcohol or drug problem. This group benefits people who have had legal or policy violations such as impaired driving, possession, or a workplace violation. Meets for two 5-hour sessions in one week.

Teen Recovery Group

Teen Recovery is an addictions group that helps address early problematic substance use by aiming to lower risk, increase recovery skills and knowledge, and increase social/family support. Meets once a week at the Porter County Juvenile Detention Center for 12 sessions. This group is appropriate for both justice-involved and non-justice-involved youth.

Medication-Assisted Treatment

Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) is an evidence-based treatment for substance use disorders that combines prescribed medication with therapy and other supports. Outpatient services can also provide MAT by prescribing Suboxone or naltrexone/Vivitrol to manage symptoms of opioid use and develop stability to live substance free.

Outpatient Medication Assisted Treatment

Outpatient services provide MAT by providing Suboxone or naltrexone/Vivitrol to manage symptoms of opioid use and develop stability to live substance free.

Recovery Center

Recovery Center provides medication-assisted treatment for adults 18 years and older who are dependent on opioids.

While medications for MAT can include methadone, buprenorphine, and naltrexone, Recovery Center specializes in methadone. Considered the leading evidence-based treatment for opioid use disorder, methadone is recognized by experts as the medication most likely to lead to long-term success. Daily dosing of methadone helps to reduce both cravings and withdrawal symptoms. Therapy and other services offer support, coping skills, education about addiction, and connection to community resources.

Operated under the close supervision of both a Medical Director and a Program Director, Recovery Center at Porter-Starke Services customizes care and treatment to help each person on their path to recovery. Locations are available in Valparaiso and La Porte.
